Microsoft and 3M have announced a strategic partnership spanning data center optical connectivity and enterprise AI adoption. Under the July 15 deal, Azure becomes the first public hyperscale cloud provider to deploy 3M’s Expanded Beam Optical (EBO) technology in its data centers, while 3M will roll out Microsoft’s AI and digital platforms across key internal business functions. The collaboration unites Microsoft’s hyperscale infrastructure and digital tooling with 3M’s materials science and precision manufacturing expertise, accelerating enterprise AI adoption and upgrading the physical network layer supporting cloud and AI workloads.
EBO Technology Deployed in Azure Data Centers
The infrastructure pillar centers on 3M’s EBO technology, which Microsoft will deploy to expand Azure’s capacity for generative AI and high-performance workloads. Traditional fiber connectors rely on direct physical contact between polished end faces, making them vulnerable to dust and debris and requiring frequent cleaning and inspection to sustain signal quality. In contrast, EBO uses lenses to expand and collimate light beams across a connector air gap, lowering sensitivity to contamination and physical wear.
The design enables faster deployment, greater dust tolerance and simpler maintenance than conventional contact-based connectors, delivering clear advantages for dense, frequently updated data center cabling environments. Microsoft’s early adoption validates EBO’s ability to shorten deployment cycles and maintain stable optical performance amid routine installation and maintenance handling. For operators running massive AI cluster fiber networks, faster rollouts and lower maintenance overhead deliver more practical value than incremental optical upgrades alone.
3M is scaling EBO component production to meet rising hyperscale demand for AI infrastructure buildouts. Its mature single-mode EBO design, refined through decades of materials and precision manufacturing innovation, is optimized for high-volume data center deployment. The firm also helped establish the EBO Multi-Source Agreement (MSA), an industry standardization initiative that enables cross-vendor component interoperability — a critical prerequisite for widespread supply chain adoption beyond proprietary single-client deployments.

3M Adopts Microsoft AI Tools for Internal Digital Transformation
On the enterprise operational side, 3M will deploy Microsoft’s AI and digital tools across its corporate transformation roadmap, covering customer service, finance, sales and marketing. The partnership aims to streamline workflows, strengthen data-driven decision-making, and lift customer experience and employee productivity.
A key ongoing initiative pairs Microsoft Frontier engineers with 3M’s Global Business Services team to build an AI-powered customer order management workflow. The automated system handles credit checks, delinquency assessments and system updates, with human-in-the-loop oversight and real-time monitoring dashboards embedded throughout the process. It is designed to cut manual workloads, standardize operations, accelerate cash flow, free teams for high-value tasks, and improve process scalability and auditability.
Jon Van Wyck, 3M Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, noted that AI serves as a core driver for business growth, customer experience optimization and team efficiency. He emphasized the partnership focuses on practical, mutually beneficial AI and infrastructure advancement rather than speculative experimentation.

Microsoft and 3M will extend their collaboration through continuous technical innovation, cross-team engineering and commercial engagement, and joint development across Microsoft’s data center and device ecosystem. The EBO MSA represents the partnership’s most meaningful industry milestone, outweighing Azure’s individual deployment. While a single cloud vendor’s adoption signals product viability, cross-vendor standardization via MSA will determine whether expanded-beam optics emerges as a mainstream alternative to traditional direct-contact fiber connectors across the data center industry, rather than remaining a limited, proprietary implementation.
