XenData appliances combine files and objects in single tape archive

Active archiving vendor XenData rolled out three new archive appliances integrating unified file and object archive connectivity.

XenData delivers tiered storage platforms that archive data onto LTO tape via robotic libraries and standalone drives, alongside local disk object storage and public cloud object tiers. Each appliance features a high-speed disk or SSD storage layer delivering write caching and smart pre-fetch capabilities to boost overall performance. The hardware works with mainstream LTO library brands including HPE, IBM, Qualstar, Quantum, Spectra Logic and Symply, enabling nearline tape capacity scaling into multiple petabytes.

CEO Dr Phil Storey commented: “Our new appliances connect file-native applications with local object storage seamlessly. They deliver affordable long-duration archival storage compatible with both file system and object-based operational workflows.”

The company’s established archive appliance lineup consists of these models:
X100 Archive Appliance or Cluster – Designed for enterprise LTO libraries with SAS/FC drives, supporting over 100 PB total capacity and 1 PB+ RAID cache
X50 Archive Appliance – Supports LTO libraries with a maximum of 8 SAS or FC tape drives, with RAID cache scaling to 144 TB
X40-S Archive Appliance – Accommodates up to 8 SAS/FC LTO drives, paired with 18.75 TB SSD RAID cache
X25-S Archive Appliance – Works with a maximum of 4 SAS tape drives and includes 7.68 TB SSD cache
X20 Archive Appliance – Supports up to 2 SAS tape drives with 20 TB HDD cache
X10 Media Archive Appliance – Built for 2 SAS or USB tape drives and unlimited offline tape cartridge storage

Updated v3 iterations of the X20, X25-S and X50 appliances now support simultaneous NFS/SMB file and S3 object access. The X25-S v3 also receives an upgraded cache capacity:
X50 v3 Archive Appliance – Supports up to 8 SAS/FC LTO tape drives, with either 64 TB or 144 TB HDD RAID cache; it can govern a 2.1 PB LTO library expandable beyond 16 PB total capacity
X25-S v3 Archive Appliance – Compatible with a maximum of 4 SAS tape drives, equipped with 12 TB SSD cache
X20 v3 Archive Appliance – Supports up to 2 SAS tape drives and retains 20 TB HDD cache

All appliances run Windows Server 2025, and users can connect through multiple SMB/NFS shares or HTTPS-backed S3 buckets. Files and objects operate interchangeably within the system. Standard file paths and filenames map directly to S3 object keys when data is accessed via object storage interfaces.

These systems support LTO-10 and all older tape generations, delivering far lower per-terabyte storage costs than conventional HDD or enterprise flash arrays. They also offer robust ransomware mitigation: erased files and historical file revisions remain preserved on tape cartridges, enabling simple point-in-time data recovery for users.
