Veeam says agentic AI is the number one cyber threat

AI agents are rapidly emerging as a top cyber threat. Veeam states that siloed data resilience and security tools create visibility, governance and recovery gaps amid enterprise AI adoption. The vendor aims to unify all workloads and locations on a single scalable platform to mitigate these risks.

Veeam has unveiled multiple updates, including Veeam Data Platform (VDP) v13.1, the new DataAI Command Platform, DataAI Resilience Module, Intelligent ResOps, and its Data and AI Trust Maturity Model.

Rehan Jalil, Veeam President of Products and Technology and former Securiti CEO, commented: “Persistent ransomware, infrastructure shifts and fast AI innovation complicate modern data resilience. Fragmented security and governance tools increase overhead and blind spots. VDP v13.1 and the DataAI Resilience Module deliver intelligent resilience operations, enabling clean, fast recovery and trusted data for AI-driven businesses.”

VDP 13.1 includes over 70 enhancements focused on hypervisor compatibility, identity recovery, cybersecurity, cost optimization and broader threat detection. Key upgrades cover unlimited hypervisor portability, Active Directory Forest Recovery, post-quantum cryptography, cost-efficient NAS archiving and long-term retention, plus expanded scanning across AWS, Azure, NAS and Microsoft 365.

Built following Veeam’s $1.7 billion Securiti AI acquisition, the DataAI Command Platform unifies data, access, identities and AI for autonomous enterprise AI agent workflows.

Veeam CEO Anand Eswaran said: “Enterprises have AI deployment infrastructure but lack trust infrastructure. Our platform adds the missing layer for resilience, security, governance, compliance and privacy. As AI agents access internal data, the data itself becomes the new security boundary, requiring a modern trust framework for safe AI adoption.”

Veeam cited third-party research claiming AI agents outnumber human employees at an 82:1 ratio, with 97% holding excessive privileges. These automated entities compress threat detection and response windows, making agentic AI the leading cyber threat. Notably, the 82:1 machine identity ratio derives from CyberArk’s April 2025 report, while the 97% privilege figure comes from an Entro Security study — metrics Veeam applies specifically to AI agents for emphasis.

The DataAI Command Platform integrates six core capabilities across production and backup data to cover all enterprise IT assets:
DataAI Command Graph: The platform’s intelligent backbone with 300+ cross-environment connectors. It identifies sensitive data, access permissions and risk-causing changes across live and backup systems with granular visibility unavailable in siloed tools.
DataAI Security: Unified data and AI security posture management combined with identity intelligence.
DataAI Governance: Source-level data controls blocking unauthorized access by sanctioned or rogue AI agents.
DataAI Compliance: Pre-mapped for 100+ global regulations to generate audit-ready evidence.
DataAI Privacy: Real-time jurisdiction-based privacy policies powered by an advanced people data graph.
DataAI Precision Resilience: Targeted recovery to reverse specific data anomalies without full-system rollbacks.
Veeam previewed two platform modules: Intelligent ResOps for M365 and the DataAI Resilience Module.

Veeam Intelligence ResOps
As the platform’s first resilience tool, it enables intelligent data retention, context-rich incident response and granular recovery for Microsoft 365. Driven by the Command Graph, it continuously maps data, permissions and AI activity to support data-driven backup and recovery decisions. Admins gain contextual insights into sensitive, regulated and redundant ROT data, alongside full visibility of user and Copilot actions. The tool minimizes disruption by restoring only compromised data within minutes.

DataAI Resilience Module
This module delivers a unified operational interface for resilience monitoring. It includes global workload inventory, simplified daily workflows, standardized configurations and embedded AI agents for log analysis, automated ticketing and capacity planning. It lays the foundation for consistent user experience across Veeam’s product portfolio.

Data and AI Trust Maturity Model
Built on Emerald Research Group’s survey data, this framework evaluates enterprise AI governance readiness. Research indicates firms adopt AI agents faster than their supporting identity and data infrastructure can mature.

Eswaran noted: “Most companies claim AI scalability readiness but lack verifiable audit-level evidence. Our maturity model delivers objective gap assessment and actionable roadmaps for operational AI trust.”

Veeam’s specialist-led assessment benchmarks users across four pillars: Understood, Secured, Resilient and Unleashed. Deliverables include scored evaluations, peer comparisons, prioritized optimization plans and executive-grade audit reports.
