Kaseya’s Unitrends is removed from this year’s evaluation. Aside from this exclusion and minor positional shifts among Leaders, the overall vendor ranking landscape remains largely unchanged.
Gartner analysts note the backup and data protection platforms (BDPP) market is evolving rapidly to protect emerging workloads on complex applications and data structures. Modern data protection demands focus on simplified, automated backup operations, new cyber threat loss mitigation, and alignment with updated regulatory requirements.
Gartner puts forward the following forward-looking forecasts for the BDPP market:
By 2030, 70 percent of organizations will prioritize identity system recoverability alongside preventive IAM controls, up from under 15 percent in 2026.
By 2030, 35 percent of enterprises with external SLA commitments will add minimum viable recovery plans to incident response protocols, rising from nearly 0 percent today, addressing mismatches between standard recovery timelines and contractual uptime requirements.
By 2030, 35 percent of organizations will deploy cloud application infrastructure recovery solutions to complement IaC-based disaster recovery orchestration, up from less than 5 percent in 2026.
By 2030, 40 percent of regulated enterprises in data sovereignty and resilience-governed regions will adopt jurisdiction-specific backup and recovery architectures to ensure compliance and independent recovery, compared with under 10 percent currently.
By 2029, 70 percent of enterprises will shift cloud backup management from cloud teams to internal IT operations, versus 25 percent in 2025.
By 2029, 90 percent of BDPP tools will integrate generative AI (GenAI) to optimize management and operational support, up from fewer than 25 percent in 2025.
Besides officially evaluated vendors, Gartner lists notable unrated providers: Acronis, Bacula, Kaseya and Synology.
Rubrik has secured Gartner Leader recognition for seven consecutive cycles. Veeam earns its 10th Leaders placement and ranks highest in Ability to Execute for the seventh straight year.
Commvault retains Leader status for the 15th consecutive year, supported by ongoing innovation in cyber resilience, recovery, cloud protection and operational simplicity. Its AI-powered Commvault Cloud unifies core capabilities to strengthen data security, identity resilience and cyber recovery for complex hybrid environments.
Druva attributes its strong market position to robust momentum, driven by its fully managed SaaS architecture, Dru MetaGraph AI, identity-aware recovery and agentic workflow capabilities.
