StorONE can tier disk data to existing all-flash arrays
StorONE expanded its real-time tiering capability to span disk and solid-state media, letting firms reserve a segment of their existing all-flash arrays as a high-speed performance tier. The platform caches disk-resident data at the block level onto flash, boosting the usable effective capacity of flash by nine times.
Persistent, heavy AI workloads create massive demand for GPU HBM and CPU DRAM, yet constrained component supply drives steep capacity pricing and extended order lead times. Enterprises are rapidly adopting SSDs to host working datasets for costly AI servers, since flash delivers far faster data throughput than spinning disk. Flash chip output remains capped by limited fabrication plant throughput, pushing up both pricing and delivery timelines. At present, SSDs carry roughly 15 times the cost of HDDs, and brand-new flash hardware typically comes with 9–15 month procurement lead windows.
This market shift has spurred widespread interest in leveraging flash as an acceleration cache paired with low-cost bulk disk storage. The hybrid setup combines flash-grade I/O responsiveness with disk-scale raw capacity, easing pressure from limited flash stock. StorONE previously supported utilization of unused SSD space, and the updated function now dedicates pre-allocated space within production flash arrays as a high-performance tier, backed by large-capacity disk pools.
Gal Naor
Gal Naor, StorONE’s founder and chief executive, stated: “Back at Storwize, we overturned the widespread view that primary storage could not deliver substantial capacity savings, and the industry ultimately adopted this innovation. We stand at an analogous turning point today, disputing another entrenched industry premise: that expanding storage needs require purchasing extra flash hardware. This is no longer the case. With flash supplies tightening and costs rising steeply, businesses must extract drastically greater utility from their existing flash deployments.”
Naor co-founded Storwize, a real-time compression storage software startup launched in 2004; IBM purchased the firm for $140 million back in 2010.
Numerous storage vendors have rolled out distinct solutions to mitigate the SSD capacity crunch:
---Dell enables tiering workflows across all-flash, hybrid flash-disk and pure disk storage arrays
---Hammerspace released a 12-page Strategic Infrastructure Survival Guide
---Data lifecycle platform Komprise runs a Flash Stretch Assessment service to identify infrequently accessed files and migrate them to public cloud disk, freeing local on-premises flash capacity
---WEKA published a NAND Flash Shortage Survival Guide
StorONE notes legacy tiering tools were built chiefly for archival use cases and cold data migration workflows. Its proprietary Real-Time Tiering (RTT) engine is purpose-built for active production storage, delivering constant, live performance optimization.

Business applications access a unified logical volume, while StorONE autonomously redistributes hot and cold data blocks across storage tiers with block-level precision in real time. This mechanism unlocks up to 9x greater usable capacity from existing all-flash hardware. StorONE’s v4.0 software stack also delivers enterprise-ready storage functionality: multi-protocol compatibility, cross-system replication, end-to-end encryption, more than 100,000 write-protected immutable snapshots per volume, and robust advanced data protection suites.
