Media tech startup Shade has secured $14 million in funding to strengthen its position in entertainment and media file sharing, streaming and intelligent search.
Its platform enables media creative teams to access multi-source files in a single workspace, featuring partial file streaming, AI-generated metadata and natural language search functions.
Founded in New York in 2022 by CEO Brandon Fan and CTO Emerson Dove, the company has developed ShadeFS, a cloud-native virtual file system mountable on Linux and MacOS (Intel and Apple silicon) as a local cloud drive.
Fan stated that Shade unifies end-to-end media workflows on one streamlined storage platform for accessing, searching, reviewing and archiving media assets. Users can stream 50GB+ files directly into non-linear editing (NLE) software without full downloads. During data ingestion, AI automatically tags, transcribes and analyzes footage, allowing staff to instantly locate specific clips such as executive commentary without manual scrubbing. Its native collaboration tools sync annotated comments to NLE timelines, consolidating feedback and replacing multiple disjointed legacy tools with one centralized asset management system.
Led by Khosla Ventures, Construct Capital and Bling Capital, the $14 million financing round lifts Shade’s total funding to $20 million. Crunchbase records show a $4.2 million seed round in January 2024, preceded by an estimated $1.8 million angel investment. The two founders previously built media products and were frustrated by Dropbox’s inherent file-sharing limitations.
Shade natively integrates with mainstream creative tools including Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, Unreal Engine, Blender and Unity. It targets basic cloud storage platforms such as Box, Dropbox and Google Drive. Its competitors also cover multiple segments: cloud file services (CTERA, Egnyte, Nasuni, Panzura), media streaming vendors (Lucid Link, Suite Studios), and data orchestration providers including Arcitecta MediaFlux and Hammerspace. Shade differentiates itself with workflow optimization tailored specifically for media creators.
ShadeFS is accessible via browsers or desktop applications, allowing users to mount disparate source drives like local storage. Instead of importing entire media files, it streams only required segments, with intelligent caching accelerating repeated access. Users can also pin complete files for local duplication and faster retrieval.
Powered by AI auto-tagging and LLM natural language technology, the platform enables simple queries such as “motorcycle rider” or “CEO sustainability soundbite”, returning timestamped video clips for rapid access.
The solution supports granular permission controls and timestamp-based commenting to streamline media team collaboration, alongside extensive media file format compatibility.
Shade remains exclusively focused on the entertainment and media sector, rather than industries like AEC. Although technically expandable, new verticals would require equivalent ecosystem integration and workflow customization.
The newly raised capital will fund four key development directions: upgrading the unified design system and user experience; building cross-modal search for images, videos and text to enhance moment detection and timestamp metadata; developing business-oriented file systems with flexible object mapping and no-code automation workflows; extending ShadeFS for developers and launching a Shade App Store.
