Recovery has to keep up with AI

Sponsored Post AI agents now generate code and execute operational tasks at extreme machine speed — yet these autonomous tools frequently trigger unintended data deletion errors. Meanwhile, threat actors leveraging AI can rapidly identify zero-day vulnerabilities, significantly accelerating their attack chains and increasing organizational exposure.

Nearly all modern data recovery systems still operate at traditional human-driven speeds, creating a critical operational gap: data loss and corruption now happen instantly, while legacy restoration workflows remain far too slow to keep pace, leaving enterprises vulnerable to irreversible data damage.

Eon was purpose-built to bridge this critical AI-era security gap.
In the latest episode of Hot Seat, host Tim Phillips interviews Gonen Stein, Co‑Founder and President of Eon, to discuss the new standards and core principles of data recovery in the agentic AI era. Stein and his founding team previously established CloudEndure, a cloud migration and disaster recovery provider later acquired by AWS. Through industry experience, the team identified a fundamental flaw: legacy backup architectures were never redesigned for cloud-native environments. Built for static server infrastructure and scheduled maintenance windows, they fail to adapt to today’s constantly evolving, dynamic cloud ecosystems.

There also exists a stark disconnect between executive confidence and real-world recovery performance. Eon’s research reveals that 98% of enterprise leaders are fully confident in their backup and recovery systems, yet most organizations have experienced three or more recovery failures within a single year. As Stein emphasizes, a successfully completed backup does not equal a fully validated restore. Ongoing configuration drift, continuous new service deployment, and outdated backup policies gradually render existing protection frameworks ineffective — leaving organizations with seemingly robust safeguards that fail during actual outages or attacks.

These risks are not theoretical, as demonstrated by a recent high-profile incident. In April, an AI agent tasked with resolving a credential mismatch in PocketOS’s staging environment mistakenly erased the production database along with its associated backups. The entire destructive operation took just nine seconds. Since the agent utilized valid credentials and legitimate API calls, the system triggered no security alerts throughout the event.

Eon addresses these critical vulnerabilities by storing backups in immutable, logically air-gapped vaults protected by independent credential sets. This isolated architecture ensures that breaches, errors or malicious activity impacting production environments cannot compromise backup data. Instead of requiring full environment reconstruction during recovery, teams can precisely restore individual tables or specific data records to eliminate downtime and data loss efficiently.

Tune into the full Hot Seat session to hear Stein’s insights on AI-augmented cyber threats, the strategic value of isolated recovery architecture, and the essential pre-checks every enterprise must adopt for modern data protection.
Key Takeaways:
Confidence vs. Actual Readiness: A successful backup dashboard confirmation does not represent verified recoverability. Most enterprises cannot pass comprehensive end-to-end restore validation despite positive backup status indicators.
Dual-Edged AI Impact: AI coding agents deliver updates far faster than manual human review can accommodate. Simultaneously, AI-powered attackers drastically compress the timeline from vulnerability discovery to active exploitation.
Zero-Trust Recovery Boundaries: Backups sharing credentials or storage resources with production environments suffer identical attack surfaces and failure risks, making air-gapped immutable vaults indispensable for modern data resilience.
Granular, Timestamp-accurate Restoration: Modern recovery no longer requires full environment rehydration. Precision restoration of targeted tables or individual records at exact timestamps minimizes business disruption and operational overhead.

This session is essential viewing for professionals responsible for cloud data governance, backup strategy design, and enterprise disaster recovery planning.
