Greg Knieriemen has left his role as Senior Director of Sales Enablement at Hitachi Vantara to lead global marketing at storage vendor Quantum.
This hire fills a critical executive vacancy at Quantum, which stabilized its business after resolving severe financial risks via a board overhaul. New CEO Hughes Meyrath has built a refreshed leadership team, appointing William White as CFO, Tony Craythorne as CRO and Geoff Barrall as Chief Product Officer, while restructuring the company’s financial foundation.
The management overhaul has turned Quantum’s business around: corporate debt has been reduced and revenue has resumed growth. The firm will release its full fiscal 2026 financial results on June 15, with early signals pointing to continued year-over-year revenue expansion.
CRO Tony Craythorne commented on the appointment: “Greg combines strong strategic marketing vision with credible technical know-how. He has built clear market narratives, led successful technical evangelism programs, and translated complex storage technology into tangible customer value. He will play a key role in communicating Quantum’s data management strengths, enabling optimal data placement for customers and boosting demand across all global market segments.”
Quantum’s tape library business has long underperformed, as its former CEO’s push to sell tape systems to hyperscalers ended in failure. Yet the booming AI sector has opened new enterprise tape market opportunities, driven by longer-term data retention requirements for AI inference workloads.
Worsening global memory supply chain shortages have also lifted market demand for SSDs and HDDs, both still constrained by limited supply. Facing costly and scarce primary storage hardware, enterprises aim to cut flash and disk capacity costs by migrating cold data to low-cost secondary storage, either public cloud or on-premises archival systems. However, public cloud storage brings growing fees amid expanding data volumes and frequent data migration.
Quantum offers end-to-end tiered storage infrastructure spanning flash, disk and tape, alongside integrated data management and protection software to solve these industry challenges. The company lacks focused marketing messaging for its tiered storage advantages — a key gap Greg is hired to fill.
Greg will oversee Quantum’s global corporate and product marketing teams, with core priorities including strengthening brand positioning, driving sales demand, and deepening customer and partner connections. He will highlight Quantum’s capabilities for managing explosive data growth, helping customers place data properly to balance cost, performance and accessibility, and deliver sustainable long-term data retention.
Greg boasts solid familiarity with Quantum’s channel ecosystem. Prior to his marketing roles at Hitachi Vantara and NetApp, he served as Marketing VP at Chi Corporation, a long-standing Quantum channel partner, allowing him to quickly adapt to the company’s partner network.
Greg stated his work priorities: “Enterprises today struggle with fast-growing data volumes while balancing cost, performance and operational efficiency. Quantum’s solutions help businesses control data management spending, cut operational complexity and reduce power consumption for stable long-term data archiving. I will streamline Quantum’s brand messaging to align closely with real customer pain points, and better support partners to improve sales performance.”
