NetApp federates performance-boosted StorageGRIDs into single namespace for greater scale

NetApp has upgraded its StorageGRID object storage platform with faster performance, a unified global federated namespace, enhanced scalability, simplified administration and stronger security features.

Enterprise unstructured object data has become a critical resource for AI large language models and intelligent agents, with model quality highly dependent on accessible data volume and high-throughput infrastructure. The newly released StorageGRID v12.1 delivers substantial throughput and capacity improvements over v12.0, alongside upgraded security and governance controls.

Sandeep Singh, NetApp Senior VP and General Manager of Platform, stated that enterprises are racing to turn massive distributed unstructured data into actionable AI insights, requiring intelligent, fully accessible AI-ready storage infrastructure. StorageGRID 12.1 expands NetApp’s data platform capabilities, equipping customers with a global unified namespace to manage hyper-scale data, accelerate AI and analytics workloads, and maximize value across distributed data environments.

Key StorageGRID v12.1 Capabilities
The platform supports seamless management of globally dispersed StorageGRID deployments via a federated namespace, scaling up to 10 Exabytes without application or workflow re-architecture. Workload-dependent throughput jumps up to 400% versus v12.0, delivering a maximum 12 TB/s throughput for AI factory environments. It supports billion-scale object batch operations and enables AI agents to track bucket changes since last scanning, streamlining end-to-end AI data pipeline construction. Updated governance tools feature multi-admin verification, strengthening compliance controls for regulated industries.

Caching Architecture & Competitive Positioning
Unlike rivals that heavily promote standalone caching upgrades, v12.1 introduces no new independent caching features. StorageGRID adopts a dual-ring architecture to balance speed, scale and usability. The high-performance inner ring consists of S3 cache resources delivering near-line-rate latency for active datasets, supporting dedicated GPU cluster connections. The high-capacity outer ring offers massive throughput and high availability, capable of linking to multiple GPU clusters concurrently.

NetApp noted in a 2025 v12.0 blog that S3 RDMA will be core to future object storage and AI integration, though it has not yet rolled out deep Nvidia partnerships — unlike key competitors MinIO, Cloudian and Scality, which all support Nvidia GPU Direct technology.

Competitor upgrades include MinIO’s petabyte-scale MemKV caching for AIStor GPU acceleration, Cloudian’s Nvidia blueprint-compatible HyperScale AIDP appliances with STX KV caching support, and Scality’s policy-driven ADI four-tier storage architecture with S3-over-RDMA for AI workloads.

NetApp stresses traditional standalone caches suffer from complex deployment, inconsistent security policies and disjointed data consistency, requiring manual cache rule maintenance. Its native integrated cache solves these pain points with unified security, consistent data logic and zero-code deployment acceleration.

Overall, StorageGRID matches or surpasses Cloudian, MinIO and Scality in scalability and throughput, with only MinIO’s 19.2 TB/s AIStor throughput exceeding its performance ceiling.
