Nasuni reckons it has the AI juice
Nasuni has enhanced its edge site data delivery speeds, added Model Context Protocol (MCP) support for AI agent and model data access, and launched a rebranding initiative to highlight its AI-focused credentials. The move signals the company’s evolution beyond its roots in collaboration and cloud file services, positioning it now as an unstructured data platform built for both enterprise teams and AI workloads.

The acquisition of Resilio has been pivotal to Nasuni’s speed boost, enabling high-speed access to shared files across offices, remote sites, and hybrid work environments. Its MCP integration treats AI agents as quasi-human Nasuni users, granting them the same data access controls—ensuring local agents also benefit from fast, governed data access. MCP, a standardized protocol that simplifies AI tool integration by providing a universal interface, has become increasingly critical as enterprises adopt AI agents and large language models (LLMs) at scale.

Sam King, Nasuni’s CEO, commented: “The enterprise technology landscape is at an inflection point, and our platform's core architecture was built for this moment. Nasuni has been a pioneer in cloud file storage since its founding. With built-in permissions, versioning, protection, and a global namespace, we are now also uniquely designed to power enterprise work in the AI era.”

This inflection point centers on AI, and Nasuni’s new brand identity reflects this shift. The updated logo incorporates the letters “A” and “I” in its design, resembling a human figure—symbolizing the integration of people and AI at the company’s core. “We wanted to literally, in the case of the logo, put people and AI coming together at the centre of what we do,” King explained. A distinctive purple color replaces the green elements of its previous branding, marking a clear break from its past identity.

Conceptually, Nasuni operates as a hub-and-spoke model: a central hub (combining object storage and file metadata management) connected to multiple distributed edge environments. Data changes in any location are registered and synced to all others at LAN-like speeds, eliminating the need for VPNs or specialized hardware/software at edge sites—thanks to Nasuni’s accelerated data transfer capabilities. AI agents and models operating within this ecosystem gain MCP-guided fast access to Nasuni-hosted data, streamlining AI workflows.

Nick Burling, Nasuni’s Chief Product Officer, emphasized the end of hardware-reliant file infrastructure solutions: “The era of solving file infrastructure problems with more hardware is over. Supply is constrained, costs are rising, and enterprises need a better model. … Nasuni is designed to deliver permission-aware, continuously indexed file intelligence that AI can safely act on, grounded in the same source of truth enterprise teams depend on every day.”

To support its new positioning, Nasuni is rolling out two key capabilities aimed at boosting enterprise productivity and enabling governed AI access to trusted file data:
Active Everywhere v6 delivers LAN-speed access to governed file data for edge teams, operating within Nasuni’s existing namespace, permissions, and governance framework. It simplifies edge infrastructure by eliminating the need for WAN optimizers or VPN devices, cutting rapidly rising hardware costs.

AI Activate extends the Nasuni platform to AI agents and LLMs via MCP, providing the same governed, permission-aware access that human users receive. Authorized AI tools can discover, read, and act on file data within existing trust boundaries—no separate data pipelines, copies, or new infrastructure required. Nasuni notes its core architecture is “uniquely suited for building data pipelines for AI,” enabling AI to work directly on file data without unnecessary intermediaries.

The Resilio-enhanced speed delivers dramatic improvements, as Burling explained: “A lot of our customers are in the architecture, engineering, construction world working on very big design files. ArcGIS is one of the most challenging applications because it’s complex and chatty. Opening a file and making a basic edit could take upwards of three and a half minutes on the Nasuni platform without Resilio—due to repeated round trips and the need to maintain collaboration locks. Now, it takes about 24 seconds.” This represents a nearly 9x performance improvement.

Resilio’s UDP-based protocol drives this speed boost: it eliminates VPNs and redundant round trips to lock servers, leveraging a mesh architecture to maintain locking directly within clients in the customer’s environment—these factors combine to deliver massive performance gains.

King highlighted the alignment between Nasuni’s existing strengths and AI needs: “What we've been doing—building a platform for enterprise teams to access unstructured data securely, manageably, and scalably—now happens to be exactly what AI solutions and agents require.” AI agents, in effect, join human enterprise teams, accessing Nasuni-held data through the same secure, efficient channels.

Burling noted another key benefit: preventing AI agents and models from being overwhelmed by irrelevant data that would exceed their context windows. “It’s about focusing on what you expose to ChatGPT, Copilot, and other agents. We ensure they don’t have to index all data themselves or sift through hundreds of millions of files. For example, a construction firm evaluating past bridge projects can narrow the scope to that specific dataset, maintaining tight focus when using generative AI for new proposals or designs. That’s a critical part of our announcement.”

Nasuni handles file content and metadata indexing as a hosted service, so customers avoid deploying new infrastructure. It enforces permissions against this index and leverages hosted MCP for plug-and-play integration with AI tools—simplifying adoption for enterprises.
Notably, Nasuni is not extending its software to include AI-focused extract, transform, and load (ETL) pipelines for AI model and agent data stores. Instead, its metadata and MCP integration fuels upstream AI processing, ensuring the Nasuni data foundation remains future-proof and doesn’t require changes as AI agents and models evolve—a key advantage highlighted by Burling.

Burling added: “You’ll hear us talk a lot about bringing AI to your data, not data to your AI. You shouldn’t have to create copies of data, whether in a data lake or elsewhere. The Resilio solution helps us extend the Nasuni cloud to edge technologies and any location where you need to run compute—making that data available at extremely high performance.”

This enables customers to reduce their edge location hardware footprint without sacrificing performance—in fact, performance is turbocharged. Burling shared an example: “One of our energy sector customers struggles with getting data off vessels. They can’t run expensive compute on ships just for storage, so they currently use costly managed file transfer products. Our solution will replace that.”
Nasuni supports AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and on-premises deployments, with its central index covering all these environments. Burling explained: “We give customers visibility not just within one namespace on Azure, AWS, GCP, or private infrastructure, but also the ability to understand context across all of them—all integrated at the AI layer. An agent can pull data from AWS and Azure and combine that context seamlessly.”

This creates a Nasuni fabric overlaying these diverse environments, with a potential single global namespace as a future capability. “For now, we rely on the agent or LLM to stitch that context together, but our platform makes that process incredibly easy,” Burling noted.
Looking ahead, Nasuni is poised to bring Active Everywhere to existing customers and explore new expansion opportunities—such as fast large multi-part file access in the media and entertainment market. The company may also pursue additional Resilio-style acquisitions to further strengthen its capabilities.

Active Everywhere v6 will become generally available in June. AI Activate is currently in an invite-only preview, with general availability scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.
