Kioxia and Dell cram 10 PB into slim 2RU server

Dell has deployed Kioxia’s high-capacity LC9 QLC SSDs to build a compact all-flash storage server with nearly 10TB raw capacity within a 2RU chassis.

Kioxia LC9 drives have already been adopted in Dell’s PowerEdge server lineup. The company now equips its AMD EPYC 9005-based PowerEdge R7725xd server with 40 units of E3.L form-factor LC9 NVMe SSDs (245.76TB each), delivering a total raw capacity of 9.8PB. The server can be configured with up to five 400Gbps network interface cards to ensure ultra-fast data throughput.

Arun Narayanan, SVP of Compute and Networking at Dell, commented: “The combination of Dell PowerEdge R7725xd and high-density enterprise SSDs from Kioxia provides outstanding storage density and energy efficiency, enabling enterprises to expand AI infrastructure without performance compromises.”

A full rack housing twenty such servers can reach a maximum capacity of 196PB.

Neville Ichhaporia, SVP and General Manager of Kioxia America’s SSD Business Unit, noted that the new server hardware empowers enterprises “to build high-volume data ingestion pipelines, expand data lakes seamlessly, and store massive backup datasets within a minimized physical footprint, achieving unprecedented TCO optimization.”

Besides Kioxia, multiple vendors have launched 256TB-level SSD products, including Micron 6600 ION, SanDisk UltraQLC SN670, as well as SK Hynix and its subsidiary Solidigm with the AIN D series. As previously disclosed by Scality, the firm is optimizing compatibility for Samsung’s upcoming nearline SSD. Regarded as an HDD-disrupting storage medium, this new flash product boasts comparable or even higher capacity, with an official roadmap targeting a 1PB ultra-large-capacity drive.
