Fujifilm getting it taped - quintupling production

Buoyed by growing LTO‑tape shipment volumes during the opening quarter of 2026, Fujifilm intends to expand its LTO tape production capacity to five times the prior baseline.

This Q1 2026 uptick stems from ramp‑up deliveries of the new LTO‑10 specification paired with surging archival requirements for datasets including AI‑training content. Placing this infrequently‑accessed information on disk storage carries excessive cost, leaving tape as the only practical low‑cost‑per‑terabyte archival option. Competing approaches such as holographic storage remain in early‑phase development, while DNA‑based archival technology sits at an even more nascent stage; real‑world deployment is projected to take five to ten years or longer.

Observing this sustained long‑term market shift, Fujifilm is scaling its tape‑manufacturing footprint, targeting fiscal‑year‑2028 output at five‑fold the volume achieved in 2025.

The expansion will be supported by a ¥10‑billion ($63‑million) capital injection into its production facility located in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture. Today’s LTO‑10 media delivers 40 TB raw capacity, expanding to 100 TB under a 2.5:1 compression ratio. The upcoming LTO‑11 standard will push raw capacity up to 70 TB, reaching 175 TB with compression. Industry expectations point toward an LTO‑11 market rollout around 2028‑2029, for which Fujifilm aims to have production readiness in place.

By that timeframe, Everpure‑backed Cerabyte could potentially launch its ceramic‑on‑glass archival platform, promising cost economics superior to conventional tape.

Even so, the massive global installed base of existing tape libraries will not migrate rapidly to new media. This grants Fujifilm an extended multi‑year window to capitalize on rising AI‑driven demand and grow its LTO‑tape revenue.

Should the Asia Nikkei reporting hold accurate, Sony — the second major LTO‑tape vendor — will likely follow suit with its own production increases.

As a secondary effect, tape‑library unit shipments are poised to climb for use cases such as neo‑cloud deployments, creating favourable market conditions for system vendors including Quantum and Spectra Logic alongside other tape‑library suppliers.

Taken together, artificial intelligence is breathing new life across the broader storage sector.
