Jerome Wendt’s Data Center Intelligence Group (DCIG) released five versions of its DCIG TOP 5 Cyber Resilient Purpose-Built Backup Appliance (PBBA) report, featuring ExaGrid, Huawei and Infinidat.
The five report editions cover distinct evaluation scopes:
- -All-Flash Edition: 14 assessed appliances
- -Global Edition: 14 assessed appliances
- -US Edition: 30 assessed appliances
- -3PB+ Logical Global Edition: 21 assessed appliances
- -3PB+ Logical US Edition: 19 assessed appliances
DCIG states enterprises traditionally judge PBBAs by four core metrics: backup/restore throughput, high deduplication ratios, backup acceleration protocol compatibility and total storage capacity, all of which remain evaluation benchmarks. However, robust deduplication or fast throughput deliver little value if ransomware corrupts backups, elevating cyber resilience to a mandatory fifth evaluation criterion for modern PBBAs.
Separate all-flash and hybrid/all-disk editions reflect stark gaps in data ingest and restore speeds between the two hardware types. Regional splits into US and Global versions stem from vendors like Huawei whose hardware is unavailable in the U.S. market.
Logical capacity is a new assessment metric. DCIG adopted logical storage capacity for the first time as all tested PBBAs support compression, deduplication and at least one data protection-optimized protocol, typically delivering a minimum 12:1 data reduction ratio for most backup workloads. The 3PB+ Logical Cyber Resilient Global Edition exclusively covers models offering 250TB to 3PB usable storage. The 3PB logical threshold marks the minimum capacity for fully configured single appliances; scale-out clusters can reach far larger logical capacities.
Reports are sold via DCIG’s website. Without purchasing access, full evaluator rosters and complete Top 5 vendor rankings per edition remain undisclosed. Still, ExaGrid, Huawei and Infinidat have confirmed their appearances across select editions, with ExaGrid and Infinidat publishing report excerpts on their sites.
ExaGrid
The EX540-SSD secured Top 5 spots in the All-Flash and Global editions, while the EX189 earned a Top 5 ranking in the 3PB+ Logical Global Edition.
Huawei
Huawei’s OceanProtect X9000 claimed first place in the All-Flash Edition for superior restore performance, and its OceanProtect X6000 ranked No.1 in the 3PB+ Logical Global Edition for leading cost efficiency.
Its seven-product OceanStor Protect lineup includes the May-launched X8100 and X9100, paired with a hardware compression card supporting up to 90:1 data reduction. Huawei notes ongoing product upgrades will boost backup efficiency and data cyber resilience.
Infinidat
Lenovo-owned Infinidat’s InfiniGuard B4312 earned a Top 5 listing in the 3PB+ Logical Global Edition. CMO Eric Herzog commented, “We’re excited to see the InfiniGuard continue to be recognized as one of the world’s leading purpose-built backup appliances.”
Built on InfiniBox storage arrays with the InfiniSafe cyber resilience software suite, InfiniGuard includes Neural Cache software that analyzes enterprise backup patterns to drastically accelerate subsequent restore operations, per the report.
Industry Commentary
Major PBBA vendors including Dell Technologies, HPE and Quantum are likely featured across DCIG’s five report editions.
