Dell letting sysadms chat with PowerProtect

We might reasonably call it AI Data Domain, as Dell rolls out an AI Assistant for the rebranded Data Domain platform alongside a suite of other resilience updates covering identity protection and AI services.

The PowerProtect AI Assistant delivers an improved conversational interface to manage cyber resilience across assets, tasks, restores and reporting. It generates proactive daily briefings that flag potential risks before they escalate, and a human‑in‑the‑loop approval workflow lets teams review and authorize actions before execution. These features help enterprises spot issues earlier and speed response when time is critical.

Dave Vellante, co‑founder and chief analyst at theCUBE Research, commented: “Agentic AI is shifting both the pace and scope of cyber risk. AI‑powered attacks and enterprise agents operate at machine speed, amplifying harm from compromised identities, overprivileged accounts or configuration errors. Encrypted data captured today may also be decrypted by quantum computers in the future. Dell’s focus on linking protection, detection and recovery across AI environments, identity and infrastructure addresses a key enterprise requirement — limiting disruption, sustaining core operations and returning systems and data to a verified, trusted state.”

The AI Assistant combines real‑time telemetry with retrieval‑augmented generation and external LLMs. Dell states grounding outputs in live system metrics and curated product knowledge delivers contextual conversational insights directly inside the console. Administrators can use natural language, voice commands or image uploads to pull up details on protection policies, registered assets, storage hardware and overall system health.

Any change to the environment, such as launching a backup or restore plan, requires human‑in‑the‑loop approval. This preserves administrator oversight while accelerating remediation. Dedicated Reporting and Restore Agents extend the toolset, compiling aggregated reports and guiding recovery workflows from the chat interface.

Additional enhancements include:
Tighter integration between PowerProtect and PowerScale to automatically create, schedule and manage retention‑locked local snapshots for fast recovery. PowerScale SmartSync support enables snapshot replication to ObjectScale for an extra recovery copy and long‑term retention.

New PowerProtect identity resilience tools allow businesses to restore clean, trusted instances of identity platforms including Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID and Okta. Teams can recover identity systems and access controls without lengthy manual work.

Dell also offers identity threat detection via its Managed Detection and Response for Identity service. It provides round‑the‑clock monitoring and response for identity threats such as suspicious authentication, compromised accounts and privilege abuse. When attack patterns are detected, Dell specialists can trigger automated response steps to contain incidents.

The newest PowerStore software release adds quantum‑safe encryption for data in flight over Fibre Channel. With supported Dell PowerEdge servers and configurations, this guards against harvest‑now, decrypt‑later threats.

It should be noted there is no public, confirmed case of a documented harvest‑now, decrypt‑later operation where encrypted data was collected explicitly for future quantum decryption and later uncovered. Passive data harvesting leaves minimal to no trace, so the lack of public examples is expected rather than proof the risk does not exist — a dynamic that benefits vendors selling mitigations for this attack vector.

Three new Dell AI services are launching:
Security Hardening for Dell AI Factory helps customers deploy AI Factory infrastructure securely with security controls aligned to internal IT and security standards. Dell experts audit physical, virtual and application layers, flag configuration risks for AI workloads and deliver prioritized remediation guidance.

Resilience Operations for AI centers on business priorities. Dell consultants work with organizations to map their most critical AI capabilities, then build recovery policies and procedures to safeguard them. The output is a ranked plan defining which AI applications to protect and how to recover them during outages.

Dell Post‑Quantum Readiness Assessment discovers cryptographic vulnerabilities across infrastructure and endpoints, prioritizes migration work, and produces an inventory with risks sorted by severity.

Availability timeline:
PowerProtect identity resilience for Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID and Okta is live.
Dell Managed Detection and Response for Identity is available now.
Security Hardening for Dell AI Factory launches this month.
Resilience Operations for AI is generally available.
The expanded PowerProtect AI Assistant features are active.
Updated PowerStore software will ship in November 2026.
PowerProtect and PowerScale snapshot orchestration integration arrives December 2026.
