Dell’s ObjectScale has achieved an industry first among object storage platforms, adding native support for Kioxia’s high-density LC9 245.76 TB NVMe SSDs. The solution delivers nearly 10PB of raw storage capacity within a compact 2RU chassis.
The LC9 SSDs adopt Kioxia’s eighth-generation BiCS8 218-layer 3D NAND technology, featuring PCIe Gen5 interface and QLC (4-bit per cell) architecture built on 2Tb memory dies. Each drive integrates 32 stacked dies to reach 8TB single-die capacity. Dell has already deployed Kioxia LC9 drives within its PowerEdge server lineup since last year. When paired with Dell’s software-defined ObjectScale on the PowerEdge R7725 server, the 2RU rack unit can host 40 LC9 SSDs, delivering 9.83PB raw capacity. A full rack housing 20 such servers can scale up to 196.6PB of total raw storage.
Driven by booming demand for AI unstructured data workloads, enterprises increasingly prioritize high-speed SSD-based storage despite premium pricing. Ultra-high-capacity storage enclosures effectively reduce rack space occupation, cable complexity and overall power consumption, bringing notable data center operational advantages.
Anahad Dhillon, Dell Director of Product Management, explained in an official blog post that this innovative configuration delivers tangible benefits, including optimized total cost of ownership, streamlined daily operations and a highly scalable infrastructure tailored for AI workload development.
Dell is not the only vendor offering 2RU servers with high SSD slot density. Multiple mainstream hardware providers deliver similar high-density hardware designs: the HPE Alletra 4120 storage server supports up to 48 drives per unit; Supermicro’s 2U SBB server accommodates 48 dual-port NVMe SSDs; Lenovo’s ThinkSystem SR650 V2 can carry a maximum of 40 SSDs.
However, these competitors require compatible object storage software to match Dell’s extreme storage density capability. HPE owns proprietary object storage software but lacks explicit certification for Kioxia LC9 drives. Lenovo can leverage NetApp StorageGRID yet still needs validated compatibility with LC9 SSDs. Supermicro would rely on third-party object storage solutions such as Cloudian, MinIO or Scality. While these vendors will likely add support for LC9-tier SSDs and matching object storage systems in due course, Dell has secured the first-mover advantage in this market segment.
Dell positions the PowerEdge plus ObjectScale combined configuration for core enterprise scenarios, including AI factory infrastructure, large-scale data analytics, massive content repositories, cyber-resilient storage systems and cloud-native data platforms.
