At the AI in Finance Summit, Broadcom launched VMware Tanzu Platform agent foundations, a secure-by-default runtime for autonomous AI apps on VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF). It extends Tanzu’s code-to-production framework to AI agents, helping enterprises move from isolated AI experiments to governed, production-scale deployments.
Moving AI Agents into Enterprise Operations
As AI agents take on execution and decision-making roles, operational needs shift to governance, security, and enterprise system integration. Many organizations run AI workloads in isolated environments lacking core data access and standardized controls.
Tanzu’s agent foundations fill this gap with a pre-engineered PaaS layer on VCF, letting platform teams manage AI services alongside traditional apps using familiar tools, no deep AI infrastructure expertise required.
Deny-by-Default Agent Runtime
The agentic runtime offers controls to restrict agent behavior and reduce operational risk.Trusted Buildpacks manage the software supply chain (instead of user Dockerfiles), with automatic container building, patching and validation to reduce vulnerabilities.
Structural secrets management blocks agents from unauthorized credentials, strengthened by VMware vDefend to limit lateral movement across infrastructure and SaaS.Zero-trust networking confines agents to predefined boundaries; access to internal systems/models is granted only via secure service bindings.
Developer Onboarding and Integrated Data Services
Pre-built agent templates speed onboarding, letting developers provision agents with governed access to models, Model Context Protocol servers, and IT-curated marketplace services.
Integrated data services include Tanzu for Postgres with pgvector, caching, streaming, and data flow; Spring AI memory support enables stateful agent behavior aligned with enterprise patterns.
Operational Scaling on VMware Cloud Foundation
Tanzu integrates with VCF APIs to abstract resource provisioning, ensuring agent workloads get needed compute, storage and networking without direct infrastructure interaction.Elastic scaling adapts to workload demand, supporting short-lived/persistent agents and optimizing cost.
High availability comes from redundancy and automated remediation, with continuous monitoring and self-healing for mission-critical apps.An integrated AI gateway centrally controls model/tool access, managing availability, policies, costs and safety filtering for public/private models on VCF.
Broadcom’s Tanzu Division GM Purnima Padmanabhan noted rapid agentic app development drives customer collaboration, with the foundations enabling quick deployment on VMware Cloud Foundation 9.Broadcom aligns Tanzu with enterprise AI needs via governance, security and operational consistency, building on existing VMware investments to standardize agent runtime for scalable, predictable AI deployment.
