Dell Technologies has unveiled PowerMaxOS 10.4, the newest update to its flagship mission-critical storage platform. This release zeroes in on measurable performance boosts, improved ransomware detection, expanded replication features, and closer integration with VMware and Red Hat OpenShift environments.

Performance and Efficiency Improvements
PowerMaxOS 10.4 delivers read response times that are up to 25% quicker for SRDF-protected workloads, addressing a critical need for systems running Oracle, SAP, Salesforce, and Epic applications. This performance gain stems from optimized handling of replication-aware I/O, benefiting organizations using synchronous or asynchronous disaster recovery setups.
Dell also positions this update as a cost-saving solution for the latest PowerMax 2500 and 8500 systems. Its updated node-pair architecture is engineered to boost IOPS density while lowering total ownership costs—aligning with enterprise needs to scale performance without a proportional increase in physical footprint or power usage.
Cyber Resilience and Data Protection
Security enhancements are a central part of the 10.4 release. PowerMaxOS now incorporates Advanced Ransomware Detection, which is built to spot abnormal activity earlier in the attack lifecycle. The platform also expands identity integration by supporting SSO providers such as Okta, PingFederate, and Microsoft Entra ID, along with private key support for OIDC workflows. These additions strengthen Zero Trust architectures by tightening access controls without adding operational hurdles.
Dell continues to expand its multi-site replication strategy. The platform now supports a four-site SRDF configuration, combining SRDF/Metro for active-active replication within a region and SRDF/A for cross-region failover. The inclusion of SRDF/S as a synchronous option within a region offers greater flexibility for workloads sensitive to data consistency. This architecture is designed to enable automated failover, load balancing, and full-scale recovery, with secure snapshots adding an extra layer of data protection.
VMware and OpenShift Integration
PowerMaxOS 10.4 introduces upgrades to simplify the shift from virtualized to containerized environments. VMware virtual machine migrations can be speeded up by as much as 10 times using array-based XCOPY paired with the Red Hat Migration Toolkit for Virtualization. This reduces migration windows and minimizes operational disruptions during platform transitions.
For container environments, REST API improvements allow provisioning of storage clusters for Red Hat OpenShift to be up to 7 times faster. These enhancements aim to streamline infrastructure deployment and reduce time-to-service for developers and platform teams.
Fabric and Infrastructure Readiness
The release adds support for Connectrix 128Gb Fibre Channel switches and directors, built on Broadcom Gen 8 SAN technology. This upgrade increases available bandwidth and port scalability, addressing the growing throughput demands of modern data centers. Integration with Connectrix B-Series Gen 8 fabrics also brings always-on AES-256 encryption, enhanced cryptographic services, and AI-powered management capabilities.
PowerMaxOS 10.4 further complies with regulatory requirements through FIPS 140-3 Level 2 certification for TLC flash drives, making the platform suitable for use in regulated sectors like finance, healthcare, and government.
Availability
The update is available right now, targeting enterprises running latency-sensitive workloads alongside their infrastructure modernization efforts.
